Bill Mitz is a 1972 graduate of Niles West High School, Bill was a 3-sport letterman in football, wrestling and baseball. As a linebacker and center in football, he was Niles West’s MVP his senior year. He spent a year at Indiana State University, then transferred to Drake University, Where he started for 3 years at offensive guard and was named his team’s Most valuable Offensive Player and All-Missouri Valley Conference his senior year.
Bill began his coaching career at Niles West High School in 1977, where he served as Varsity Assistant Football Coach and Head Wrestling Coach. His next stop was Holy Cross High School in River Grove, again working as Varsity Assistant Coach and Head Wrestling Coach. He began coaching football at Stevenson in 1982. In his 28 years as Head Football Coach, he had a career record of 197-98. His Patriots have made the I.H.S.A. Playoffs 22 times, advanced to the quarterfinals 3 times, the semifinals once an earned one runner-up trophy. In the past, Bill has been selected as the Chicago Bears High School Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year and is a member of the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
After retiring from Stevenson, Bill moved on to serve as the Head Football Coach at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, IL, where he still holds this position. In ten years, his teams have had a record of 60-42 and qualified for the I.H.S.A. Playoffs seven times.
